From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bicholim Conflict was a 4,500-word Wikipedia article created on July 4, 2007 by A-b-a-a-a-a-a-a-b-a (talk · contribs),[1] who is now blocked from editing indefinitely for this situation,[2][3] five years, five months, and twenty-five days before its deletion on December 29, 2012.[4] It was coined as a hoax, when ShelfSkewed (talk · contribs) came to the realization that, based on its incorrect references, formatting, and such, it was a fake, non-existent entry, declared The Bushranger (talk · contribs).[4]

The article[edit]

The subject of Bicholim Conflict was a fictitious war that occurred between the Portuguese rulers of Goa and the Indian Maratha Empire, which supposedly took place from mid-1640 to early 1641.[1] It was created on July 4, 2007 by A-b-a-a-a-a-a-a-b-a (talk · contribs), who developed the entry to good article status, a Wikipedia honor for articles, by September 2007, two months after its creation.[5][6]

October 2007, the following month, the original creator and developer of the Bicholim Conflict nominated it for featured article status, but it failed by November 2007 due to the nominator not responding to concerns regarding the entry's reference formatting or point-of-view issues.[1][7] At that time, it had 4,500-words.[5] Other encyclopedias mirrored this article using the GFDL licensing agreement, including the New World Encyclopedia and Encyclo; these encyclopedias ultimately took down the article once its deception was revealed.[8] A book based on the Bicholim Conflict article at Wikipedia can be purchased through Barnes & Noble.[8][9]

The investigation[edit]

In December 2012, ShelfSkewed (talk · contribs) began investigating the sources presented in the article, due to their suspicious ISBNs,[10] and found that all of these references in question did not exist.[1] Thus, this user created an articles for deletion discussion for the entry.[4] During this discussion, it was coined as a hoax based on its incorrect references, formatting, and such, it was a fake, non-existent entry, declared The Bushranger (talk · contribs); this administrator deleted the page, along with its edit history.[4] In addition, its book sources were a hoax.[5][6]

The user[edit]

A-b-a-a-a-a-a-a-b-a was ultimately blocked from editing definitely, due to this situation, in December 2012 by NuclearWarfare (talk · contribs),[11][12] although the editor in question had not edited for five years, October 2007.[13]

The reaction[edit]

Participants of WikiProject Good articles discussed the matter through a request for comment, while members of the Wikipediocracy forum have talked about events regarding it.[8] The former crew stated that the criteria and review procedure may need to be adjusted, and the sources presented should always be checked before passing the article in question.[14] Some users have stated the entry may have passed because the "standards were not as strictly enforced back then".[14]
