Notes

Madison was a 32-year-old member of the Continental Congress when he fell in love with 15-year-old Catherine “Kitty” Floyd, daughter of a fellow Congressman. With

Thomas Jefferson’s encouragement, Madison proposed marriage and commissioned portrait miniatures from Peale to be worn as pins. When Floyd broke the engagement, having fallen in love with a 19-year-old medical student, Madison was heartbroken.
