From George Cruikshank's illustrations to Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy. Plate V: My Uncle Toby on his Hobby-horse.

Hobby-horse, in this case, refers to a particular obsession of a person. In this case, Toby and Trim get caught up with discussions of the military, to the point of acting it out. (Book IV, Chapter XVIII)
